Post Dogmatist Painting #883 | 2017 | Cecil Touchon
by touchon · August 1, 2018
As a collage artist, Cecil Touchon is accustomed to working with found materials. This painting is designed from pieces of Chinese language newspaper from Los Angeles, CA that was received as packing matieral for acrylic paints from Nova Color paint company. Touchon saw the material as having interesting compositional possibilities and used the grid structure of the newspaper sheets to create this composition.
Touchon usually works according to some pre-established set of rules that he applies to a work in order to have a clear process of construction.
In this case, he loosely painted blue lines where the divisions of the spaces were in the sheets, painted out the existing image boxes with blue and then painted out the existing text content with white. Then he chopped up the sheets and arranged the pieces into this composition.
Upon close inspection much of the original printed matter can be seen in the background of the painting.
In the practice of non-objective painting the grid is a mainstay for structuring paintings as well as newspapers!
